Our mission at Hungry Ear Records is to serve the community as a bastion of music for everyone. It doesn't matter whether you're a casual listener or a die-hard digger; all are welcome under this roof!

Hungry Ear Records is Hawaii’s oldest record store, open since 1980.

Luke Yamashiro, Dennis Chun and Reynold Yep founded Hungry Ear Records in 1980. The Kailua store quickly became a landmark for lovers of all musical styles and formats. Sadly, Luke passed away in 2005, but his spirit and original mission statement live on, enriching the community.

In 2008, former Hungry Ear employees Ward Yamashita and Dennie Chong purchased the store to keep the dream alive. Hungry Ear Records strives to provide great customer service, selection, and shopping experience to locals and visitors. Dennie left the store in 2015, but Ward continues to run the store, along with his friendly and knowledgeable staff.

We offer state’s largest new vinyl collection plus an extensive used LP section. We are always buying used LPs, CDs and memorabilia. We specialize in rare Hawaiian albums, cassettes, and CDs, plus a huge selection of rock, jazz and reggae new and used LPs and CDs.

Our brick and mortar store is located in SALT at our Kakaako. The SALT complex is comprised of several small, locally owned unique retail shops and food establishments. We feel right at home here with our retail neighbors who carefully curate the best products, food and beverages for our visitors.

Instagram and Facebook posts are the best ways for us to keep in touch with our customers. If you are looking for something specific or need us to check our stock, give us a call at 808-262-2175. We’re at your service!
